In the context of the rapidly changing security and threat environment, the RUAG Innovation Organization (RIO) anticipates technological developments in order to sustainably strengthen Switzerland’s security and defense capabilities with fast, pragmatic and forward-looking solutions.

In view of the recent geopolitical changes, the Swiss Armed Forces defined a new target vision with the aim of strengthening defense capabilities in all spheres of influence (on the ground, in the air, in space, as well as in the cyber, electromagnetic and information space).

As a key industry partner of the Swiss Armed Forces, RUAG is therefore entering a major period of transition. Due to the replacement of many military systems, RUAG is facing a change in its business. Cultural change at all levels and targeted development of new competences and business models are essential.

Moreover, it is crucial that RUAG establishes strong networks with academic institutions, the security-relevant industry base and the startup and DDPS innovation community.

In 2022, in response to the challenges ahead, the RUAG Innovation Organization (RIO) was founded. It provides the technological, entrepreneurial and cultural framework that enables us to open up new areas of activity for the operational business with innovative solutions. RIO thus helps to establish RUAG as the leading innovation and technology partner of the Swiss Armed Forces as well as in the Swiss security sector and promotes a progressive culture of innovation within the company.

RUAG establishes itself as a partner which brings technologies and stakeholders together and makes products fit for safety-critical tasks. As a trusted integrator between the volatile startup world and the traditional defense market, RUAG promotes Swiss startups in the security sector through the RUAG Accelerator Program and creates an exchange platform with the annual RUAG Innovation Forum. This forms the basis for initiating new projects and developing new products and services in a targeted manner for the benefit of our main customer.

Innovation projects are initiated via different programs. With the Accelerator Program, we support innovative startups and enable access to new technologies and business models (outside-in approach). The Kickbox program promotes entrepreneurial thinking and empowers employees to drive innovative ideas forward within the company. The in-house swarm intelligence is used to offer new products and services commercially on the basis of a bottom-up approach.
